1. Pull Requests Are Work, Not a Favor

The team’s operational speed gets affected by the speed and accuracy of pull request (PR) reviews. Prolonged PR reviews create progress delays and cause authors to lose motivation while increasing the chances of losing important information. You need to handle reviews as urgent team efforts that require immediate action. The best practice for PR reviews involves providing useful feedback within hours instead of days. Large PRs should be broken down into smaller segments for efficient review without focusing on minor issues. Providing fast constructive reviews helps maintain team momentum while showing your appreciation for others’ schedules.

2. Get Us Over the Water, Don’t Build a Bridge

When solving problems, prioritize delivering value to users over perfecting features. Engineers often fall into the trap of over-engineering solutions—building a robust, scalable bridge when a simple raft will do. For instance, if a user needs a basic reporting tool, don’t spend weeks designing a dashboard with every possible filter; deliver a functional report first, then iterate based on feedback. Involve engineers early in discussions to align on user needs, not just feature specs. This mindset ensures you’re solving real problems efficiently.

3. You’re Done When Your Code Is in Production

The process of code implementation represents merely fifty percent of software development. Your project remains unfinished until it starts running to provide services to users. The principle regarding ownership and accountability receives particular emphasis in this context. The work remains incomplete when your code resides in a pull request (PR) or stays in quality assurance (QA) or deployment is pending.
